I sincerely hope each and every one you reading this blog have been somehow inspired, informed and put at ease with some of the advice and tips I have provided. My initial aim was to raise awareness about the long and short -term damage hair styling can have, in order to promote and encourage women of all ages to reconsider the strain there hair goes through on a daily basis. Also due to the fact that its one of our most favourite and sometimes temperamental accessory we should embrace it naturally because we should learn to appreciate it and use it as a form of positive self expression.
Something I constantly think about to motivate me to steer away from the need to straighten my hair is to save it for an occasion. I know it might sound old fashioned, but think about it, your hair will be healthier; you will look good and feel great.

If you take anything from this make sure it’s that
– I don’t expect you to never straighten your hair again, because that is unreasonable and impossible
– You use anti heat sprays when you can
– You give your hair a rest, try wearing it naturally more often
– You reduce hair exposure to heat styling by eliminating one day a week (that will make a huge difference, trust me)

Like many other girls with curly hair, i think its fair to say that we have a unique love/ hate relationship with it. The days when it dries up nicely, the curls are well proportioned and bouncy, and other days it’s out of control.

But girls with naturally straight hair have their own problems too. It’s really hard to style and curl their hair.

Throughout this campaign I myself have learnt new things in relation to the main reasons why women straighten their hair. It could be to feel good, make it easier to style and the simple fact that it provides a confidence boost. There is nothing wrong with that.

Although straight hair will never go out of style and I indeed don’t intend on it to. I do however strive to raise awareness and hope that if a few young girls and women start using the straightener more wisely they will notice a significant difference in the condition of their hair, while teaching them to appreciate their natural style before it’s too late and the damage is irreversible.

Spot the signs

A lot of you might be reading this blog and thinking, why should I worry about my hair getting damaged. It still has volume, natural shine and it doesn’t frizz. Well lucky you, however although your hair might look and feel good when left naturally or styled the damaged will slowly appear over time and we should work towards avoiding that as much as we can.

There’s more to signs of damaged than fizziness and split ends, and the solution does not always have to involve scissors. So ladies this is what you should look out for and if you can relate to 4 or more, you should really consider your current hair care regime and have a read through my previous blogs on how you can change it for the better.

The straightener is not the only one to blame

Majority of the time we are actually using these styling tools in a further more damaging way. The incorrect use can have significant side effects on not only our luscious locks but on ourselves. I can’t even count the number of times I have burnt my fingers or blistered the tip of my ear, trying to straighten every strand of hair perfectly. Or even left the straightener on and caused permanent damage to bed sheets and clothes. I still haven’t learnt my lesson. So I don’t want you girls to make the same mistakes.

Although straightening your hair is not rocket science you will be surprised at how many of us are doing it wrong. Here are a few tips to use these heating tools safely and get the most effective results with the least amount of damage.

  • Make sure your hair is thoroughly washed before hand
  • Hair should be completely dry. Preferably naturally dried to avoid using the blow dryer (when naturally drying hair do it from the tips to the roots)
  • Spray dry hair with anti heat spray
  • Look for a ceramic flat iron (cheaper products are not usually as effective as ceramic coating distributes heat evenly)
  • To get equal heat exposure, divide hair strands
  • Apply heat for no more than 15-20 seconds on each strand
  • Give it a few seconds to cool down before straightening the same strand
  • Leave and inch from the root from where you apply the straightener
  • Adjustable temperature is a plus, try keep it below 300

Lets face it oily hair is inevitable. For so long it’s been associated with unhealthy or unhygienic hair. Little did we know it’s actually the opposite? It’s a natural part of the hair repairing process that our hair follicles and scalp go through. I hate it when my hair has dried nicely and when I attempt to wear it out and style it there is an unattractive gloss. Ahh! Why? How to straighten without heat

Here it is girls, your saving grace. (Well almost.) We are all aware of the immense empowerment YouTube gives us but how many of us actually make use of it as a learning tool rather than purely for entertainment purposes. After being consumed in hours of interesting and educational videos about natural hair care and styling tips that don’t require heat I really wanted to share these videos with you. All the work can be done while you’re asleep, or even doing the house- work.


The procedure in this video can take up to a few hours to show results depending on the thickness of your hair.Tip: Try it on a family member or friend, to get the hang of it before trying it on your own hair.


Forget the old fashioned time consuming rollers and be inspired by this tutorial for those of us who have nice curls, but unfortunately they don’t always sit right, and after failed attempts with the curling iron we revert back to straightening. Don’t jump to conclusions just yet. Especially those of you who have used keratin before or are reading this while having the treatment done. This is not a personal attack, just honest advice about the pros and cons of this chemically rich straightening product, as we break down the ingredients and how it actually works. Not to forget the long- term effects that many users are unaware of, until they are unfortunate enough to experience them.

I can understand that for girls with extremely thick curly hair, it gets too much to handle. I have a lot of friends and family members who have almost given up and use keratin to lighten their hair and make it easier to maintain, wash and style. I would admit, it looks great, but I also have so much appreciation for their natural locks and I don’t want to see them slowly flatten out. No one wants straight hair forever, do they?

One of the main ingredients ‘formaldehyde.’ The primary cause of side effects, which includes irritated skin and watery eyes. It’s a chemical used in household products and detergents. This chemical protein changes the structure of the hair and manipulates it to the desired straight form. In worst cases it can change the texture of the hair.

Think about it, a natural protein found in your hair is re applied to your hair and sealed with a straightener. The process seems dramatic in itself, followed by intense rounds of drying and straightening.

The good stuff:

  • It does strengthen hair

The not so good stuff:

  • Over straightening during the process can lead to breakage
  • Rough texture on natural hair after may treatments
  • Over a few years, hair can loose its natural volume, curl or wave

Just like hair straightening there is a sense of confidence and peace of mind when your hair is well groomed and you are in control of it, not the other way around. Although it’s a great alternative to constant straightening, it is nearly as damaging due to the strong heat it is exposed to.

Being a girl, I am often overtly conscious about how other young girls and women have styled their hair. I am constantly admiring the unique colours, and textures. Weirdly it’s where I find my inspiration, and mentally critique it and best of all learn from some common mistakes and popular styles.

Just like anything in today’s society, it has a long intertwined relationship with history and culture, and why should the topic of hair be any different. The style, length and colour used to be a symbol for social status such as Britain, Greece, Egypt and China. Long hair was a symbol of femininity and short hair was strictly for males. It was, and still is a crucial accessory.

It’s without a doubt that your hair is almost intrinsic to your personality; that is it speaks for itself and sometimes on behalf of you. But not every cliché of girls with curly hair have wild personalities and those with short hair are tough and those with long hair embody the typical girly girl personality.
To all those who still think these stereotypes apply. You’re wrong, so wrong. A women’s hair is one of her most prized assets. It boosts confidence (at times), it’s your best friend (at times) and it’s a hug part of your identity. It also doesn’t look this good out with out hard work and costly maintenance. Majority of the time it pays off.

A lot of thought is put into how we wear our hair, but sometimes, I highly doubt a lot of girls think this is how I’m doing my hair so I can be perceived in this certain way. It is a part of our identity, some more than others. Wether your hair is in a ponytail or a bun, blonde or brunette, long or short, or sleeked back, embrace it.

Lets face it, the worst part of trying to style your natural hair is having frizz. One of the most common reasons as to why people straighten their hair is to tame the fizziness, but it will actually cause more of it it in the long run. It’s a never- ending cycle, but I’m going to give you some hair friendly advice that is easy and affordable. These simple, yet valuable tips are sure to make you feel more confident to embrace your natural hair.

The firs thing you should do when working on your frizz is to adopt a regime for a few months. This well get the hair follicles used to the treatment and the results would be more consistent, long lasting and effective. I don’t want this to be something you dread doing because it takes forever and requires a long process, instead you will find that it involves a few changes to your daily hair routines, ones you will look forward to doing.

• Wash hair every second or third day: constantly washing your hair strips it of its natural oils which can cause it to become dry and frizzy
• Dry your hair gently by dampening the hair: Drying the hair in different directions won’t let the cuticle lie flat.
• Use a soak in conditioner weekly: this restores the hairs smoothness, after exposure to x=chemicals and changing weather
• Anti- frizz oils: these are great products that provide temporary smoothness
• When blow drying direct the heat down to keep the hair smooth
• Trim hair regularly (every 2-3 months)

The straightener. A tool or weapon?

Daily hair straightening can lead to “mass breakage,” says Trichologist Elizabeth Phillips. A warning not to be ignored.

“First, it literally boils the moisture in the center of the hair shaft, cracking the smooth walls of the medulla and creating bubbles within the shaft that break and disrupt the flow of light (imagine a cracked prism preventing a uniform rainbow from being created). Second, the cuticle, pushed outward irregularly by these bubbles, also cracks and splits, losing its smoothness and becoming rough and more like shingles, which disrupts the reflective sheen.”

According to Dermatologist Dr Jessica Krant, this is what happens every time those ceramic plates come in contact with your hair. The following article highlights the harsh reality that hair straightening is more than just an effortless styling procedure but our hairs worst enemy.

So is it really a crime if we straighten our hair?

Well if your prone to styling it on a daily basis, then something has got to change, limiting the use of the hair straightener to up to once or twice a week can make a massive difference, and its not that hard.

Below are the most important points from the article, that majority of us can relate to and learn something from. They include:

  • Replacing the ceramic plates on your flat iron: The stickiness is caused by a build up of burnt hair cells, that are being trapped in your hair, hence causing further damage.
  • Excessive heat damages inner core and outer coat of hair. Dr Krant says that by making our “hair do things it doesn’t want to do” we are killing it. OUCH!
  • Hair straightening depletes hair of vital moisture: Hence moisture provides elasticity. Dr Phillips recommends teflon coated irons as they produce more steam for safer styling of the hair.
  • Thicker curlier hair needs more heat, therefore it’s exposed to more damage.
  • Those who colour their hair have a reduced heat tolerance.

According to Krant, scarring of follicles is another long-term side effect of straighteners and unfortunately cannot be recovered naturally. Although one might notice it soon it has a delayed effect; plummeting hair growth once the scalp and follicles have been damaged.

After reading this I doubt I will throw my straightener out, however I will definitely be more cautious of how many times I use it. One shouldn’t underestimate damage just because it’s not visible. Ladies warn your sisters, mothers and friends, its worth it.
